Windows Vista, for the first time, allowed us to use Windows Image Technology, to use the benefits of both of the world from unattend.txt file of Windows XP deployment and also the deployment at faster pace by Ghost like images.
Microsoft created a new technology, where Vista is fuly based on an image file, which is hardware independent (Ghost was not hardware independent). So, we can now build the first machine, using similar technique like unattend.txt (here it is now called as answer file, and in .xml format). Then we chain all kind of organization wide application software, that it needs to be running. And then use Windows Images technology, to create an hardware independent image from this master computer, to be deployed across dissimilar hardware. The same images can be deployed on both the desktop and laptop. We can also put different applications, AUTOMATICALLY, during the build process, depending on the model of the computer.
So, essentially, we can still have a single core build, which we can use to build many different type of boxes, eventually.
We also used Application Packaging Technology here to reduce the manpower requirement from Helpdesk, during the maintenance period. After all, that is our USP to reduce the cost, in a most obvious way.
